In this episode, balance and stability is discussed. Traditionally balance and stability has meant stillness of the body on an unstable surface. While this is true for some scenarios, it is only a small aspect of the comprehensive functional balance that is needed for efficiency, effectiveness and safety in both daily activity and competitive performance. Focusing on the "zones of transformation" results in more effective rehabilitative therapy regarding balance and stability.

In this issue of Fast Function, Gary, Dave and Bob give an in-depth explanation the essential elements of Speed and Reaction in all rehabilitation, training, and conditioning programs. These elements must be tailored to specific tasks: both optimal speed and reaction may be either slow or fast depending on the relative needs for power and precision. Time and timing is important. Traditional training programs tend to be biased toward maximized speed and reaction in dominant planes of motion, using primary muscle groups often in non-functional ways. Functional training recognizes that speed and reaction always need to be optimized in all three planes of motion and throughout the entire biomechanical chain reaction. Speed and reaction are weakest link phenomenon. Speedy reactions and reactive speed are enhanced by the whole body's capacity to decelerate (load) and accelerate (explode) efficiently and effectively in task specific Transformational Zones. Better results are achieved in less time using Functional strategies and techniques in Transformational Zones.
