Oberst : a novel by William Harrington( Book )
4 editions published between 1987 and 1990 in English and held by 279 libraries worldwide
World War II thrillers continue to proliferate at a dizzying rate, but this one is better than most. Harrington's twelfth novel is set in German-occupied France during the war and involves an attempt to rescue a Parisian Jew whose knowledge of the whereabouts of a hidden cache of gold provides the key to the liberation of Parisian Jewish children. The job falls to two British agents one the mandatory beautiful woman and a Nazi working as a double agent in order to escape the hangman's noose. The usual sex, violence, and double-dealing typical of the genre are all dispensed with finesse, and more important, the novel offers considerable insight into the severity of daily life in Paris under the Nazis.
