David Hockney : a retrospective by David Hockney( Book )
14 editions published between 1988 and 2006 in 4 languages and held by 1,614 libraries worldwide
"David Hockney (b. 1937) is one of the most significant artists exploring and pushing the boundaries of figurative art today. Hockney has been engaged with portraiture since his teenage years, when he painted Portrait of my Father (1955), and his self-portraits and depictions of family, lovers, and friends represent an intimate visual diary of the artist's life." "This illustrated book examines Hockney's portraits in all media - painting, drawing, photographs, and prints - and has been produced in close collaboration with the artist. Featured subjects include members of Hockney's family and private circle, as well as portraits of such artists and cultural figures as Lucian Freud, Francesco Clemente, R. B. Kitaj, Helmut Newton, Lawrence Weschler, and W. H. Auden. The authors reveal how Hockney's creative development and concerns about representation can be traced through his portrait work: from his battle with naturalism to his experimentation with and later rejection of photography, and from his recent camera lucida drawings to his return to painting from life in oil." "Featuring more than 250 works from the past fifty years, David Hockney Portraits illustrates not only the fascinating range of Hockney's creative practice but also the unique and cyclical nature of his artistic concerns."--BOOK JACKET.
Van Gogh's van Goghs : masterpieces from the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam by Richard Kendall( Book )
1 edition published in 1998 in English and held by 1,420 libraries worldwide
"Van Gogh's Van Goghs presents seventy paintings from the extraordinary collection of the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, home to the single greatest assemblage of the artist's paintings, drawings, and letters. The collection is based on works acquired directly from the artist by his brother Theo, an art dealer and the source of Vincent's financial and emotional support. All periods of Vincent van Gogh's brief but intensely productive career are represented: his earliest paintings in The Netherlands; his responses to French Impressionism in 1886; the images he painted while in hospitals in Arles and Saint-Remy in southern France; and his last, feverishly creative works in Auvers-sur-Oise. Van Gogh's Van Goghs represents a unique opportunity to sample the largest and most varied Van Gogh collection in the world. It accompanies a major exhibition organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, and the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, in collaboration with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art."--BOOK JACKET.
The Spiritual in art : abstract painting 1890-1985( Book )
13 editions published between 1986 and 1996 in English and held by 1,405 libraries worldwide
Traces the use of geometric signs by the Nabis and other French artists and relates this to the development of abstraction. The author describes some of the sources of ideas about the symbolism of geometric signs, in particular the writings of Helena P. Blavatsky, and traces the impact of these on the Nabis, possibly through the stimulus of Gauguin whose paintings from his Brittany period encouraged a mystical conception of art in which sacred geometry figured as one component. He goes on to discuss in detail the paintings of Paul Serusier, Paul Ranson, Maurice Denis, Charles Filiger, Jean Delville, Frantisek Kupka and Mondrian.
