LC: heroes, fantasy "Morgarath, Lord of the Mountains of Rain and Night, former Baron of Gorlan in the Kingdom of Araluen, looked out over his bleak, rainswept domain and, for peraps the thousandth time cursed. " The first volume in the “Ranger's Apprentice” series begins with Will [no last name] who is a ward of the Lord of Redmont Fief. Tomorrow will be choosing day when the wards and others turning fifteen select a craft or trade. Those not selected become agricultural laborers. Will, although slight of build, wants to be a knight and go to Battleschool for training.Unexpectedly, Will is selected by Halt to be his apprentice and become a ranger. Will is doubtful, knowing little about rangers and having heard tales about their perhaps magical abilities to scout, do intelligence work, and find their way through isolated, unknown places. Most of this volume involves his training and that of another ward, Horace, who has been decidely unfriendly to Will and who has gone to Battleschool.Although not as deeply developed, the series reminds me of Tamora Pierce's work, although here the focus in on a male rather than a female lead character. Although not unique in its world-building or character development, Flanagan tells quite a good story. There is enough action, characters interest, and writing is clear and easily understood. The print is clear and black. Cover art by John Blackford clearly stands out, appeals while suggesting adventure in a medieval setting.Recommendation:An excellent choice for larger heroic fantasy collects. The series will continue for several volumes and readers, mostly boys, will wish to read them all. I certainly enjoyed it.
